PSG target new players after Champions League triumph

Luis Enrique says PSG want new players for next season as they target more silverware.

The manager was speaking after beating defended their European title.

For Enrique, it was his third triumph in the competition, but added PSG want to be there again next ter.

He told TNT Sports: "We need to renew the squad because everyone has their position, but we need to play for the position with new players and we need to solve the things you normally you need to do usually in a team like Paris Saint-Germain.

"Maybe both teams deserved to win, but after this season, I think we deserved to win the Champions League. We are very happy and were trying to be there next year."

PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi also said the club will be targeting new players, adding to TNT Sports: "Of course we will be going to the market."

Discussing Enrique, he said: "He's a very special, as a coach, human being, as a person, he is fantastic.

"He's the best coach in the world. He has done amazing with the team. With a young team, you know the story. I would also like to thank the players of PSG this is also for them. They all gave to this project."

Iraola on a two-man shortlist, but is Enrique the other target?

Latest from Your Site News' Mark McAdam:

The brand of football clearly is one of the big factors. The shortlist to replace Arne Slot I believe has two names. One is Iraola.

If you speak to any Bournemouth fan about the style of football after the last three seasons under Andoni Iraola, they will wax lyrical about the way Bournemouth go about their business. High intensity, front-footed. They play with a real zest and an ability to get the ball forward. They use width, are very dynamic on the ball and win it high up the pitch. They really take the game to the opposition. Its that type of heavy metal brand of football. Exactly the same style under Jurgen Klopp. It wasnt about keeping the ball, it was about being exciting.

At this stage, we know Liverpool havent officially spoken to any candidates, but we know Andoni Iraola is one of those that the players would like to speak to.

Champions League day. Luis Enrique at PSG. Three league titles on the spin, could win back-to-back Champions Leagues. Would that be the perfect opportunity to say goodbye to Paris? We do know he has one year left on his contract.

I do find it fascinating that Liverpool have sacked Arne Slot today. In the next 24 hours there could be some significant changes at PSG. Who knows? We know there are two names on Liverpools shortlist. Andoni Iraolas one. Who is the other one? I just find it really intriguing that the announcement comes on a day like today.

Atletico Madrid interested in Reijnders

Atletico Madrid have registered interest in signing Manchester City's Tijjani Reijnders.

Changes are anticipated in midfield at City this summer, as they hope to complete the signing of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest.

City's position on the future of Reijnders is not yet clear, however, having only signed him last summer from AC Milan.

Atletico are looking to make new signings in midfield themselves - and Your Site News has already reported they have agreed a deal in principle with Wolves for defensive midfielder Joao Gomes.

They also want to sign a number eight-type midfielder, which Reijnders is, while Your Site News has previously reported their interest in Matt O'Riley at Brighton too.

The 27-year-old Reijnders, who is part of Ronald Koeman's Netherlands World Cup squad, made 47 appearances in all competitions and scored seven goals.

Atletico has been pursuing Ederson from Atalanta before pivoting to Gomes at Wolves as Manchester United moved more strongly into the picture for Ederson earlier this month.

Liverpool to open talks with Iraola

Latest from Your Site News' Mark McAdam, Vinny O'Connor and Rob Dorsett:

Liverpool are expected to commence formal talks with Andoni Iraola following Arne Slot's sacking as head coach.

The former Bournemouth head coach has been in negotiations with Bayer Leverkusen after appearing to cool talks with AC Milan earlier this week.

However, amidst those talks, Sky in Italy reported that Iroala was still open to the Liverpool job despite no vacancy being open at Anfield at the time.

Now it is, however, and Iroala has a strong relationship with Liverpool director of football Richard Hughes after their time together at Bournemouth.

Hughes convinced Bournemouth to hire Iraola from Rayo Vallacano in 2023. He has since done a remarkable job, putting Bournemouth in the Europa League via a sixth-place finish.

Iraola has also had Crystal Palace as an option but they have always expected him to join a bigger club - even after they won the Conference League.

Arne Slot has been sacked as head coach of Liverpool.

The Dutchman departs only a year after leading the Reds to their 20th league title, following a disappointing fifth-placed finish in his second season in charge.

The club confirmed the process to appoint a successor is under way, with recently-departed Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola a leading contender.

Livingston name Whelan as new boss

Scottish Championship side Livingston have named Glen Whelan as their new head coach.

The former Republic of Ireland and Stoke midfielder, who had a brief playing spell in Scotland with Hearts in 2019/2020, takes over following the club's relegation from the Scottish Premiership.

Whelan said: "I'm delighted to have been given this opportunity as head coach of Livingston, something I'm incredibly proud of, and I will give my all for the club moving forward.

"I'm eager to grasp this opportunity and help build a successful team that the fans can be truly proud of and get right behind. I'm grateful to the board for their belief in me, and the hard work has already begun.

"I can't wait to get started and look forward to the journey ahead."
